Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
